Written by George F. Walker
Directed by Leonard Mario Zgrablic
The reformed drug addict and her ex-con husband. The self-righteous social worker. The non-violent father and son crime duo. The kind-hearted ballbuster. The rebellious, spiteful daughter of a domineering father. And the drunken motel manager. What do they have in common? Are they the scum of the earth? The stupid? The unfortunate? The sad? The poor? How will you judge them?
Problem Child and Criminal Genius are two of the six plays from George F. Walker's Suburban Motel sequence.
With one exception, each role appears in one of the two plays (PC for Problem Child, CG for Criminal Genius). Actors will not be double-cast. The age ranges given are suggestions only.
Denise (PC; Female 18-30): A reformed prostitute and drug addict; wife and mother.
R.J. (PC; Male 18-30): A reformed convict; husband and father.
Helen (PC; Female 28-45): A case worker from child services.
Phillie (Both; Male 25-55) The manager of the motel; an alcoholic.
Rolly (CG; Male 34-55): A non-violent criminal who never gets a fair shake (so says he); father to Stevie.
Stevie (CG; Male 16-25): Son of Rolly; wants to be his father when he grows up.
Shirley (CG; Female 23-45): A criminal trying to make a name for herself.
Amanda (CG; Female 20-35): A rebellious woman trying to get out of the shadow of her crime boss father.
Auditions will be held at our theatre: 9 Princess Street East, Waterloo.
We ask that actors come prepared with a brief (1 minute or less) monologue; monologues will be available at the auditions if you are unable to prepare something. You may be asked to deliver your monologue in a different style. You will also select an excerpt from the script from which to read. Your audition may take up to 10-15 minutes. In order to ensure you have time to study the scripts, we ask that actors arrive a bit early. We may request callbacks of actors under consideration for certain roles, which would take place on Wednesday, July 17th after 8:30pm; if you’re auditioning initially on the 17th, please arrive before 8:30 if possible and be prepared to stay for callbacks.
To sign up for an audition slot in advance, fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/kwlt-suburban-motel. Doing this will save you time at the auditions. Walk-ins are welcome, but may have to wait for a break in the schedule to audition.
Actors must be available for all performances (September 26, 27, 28; October 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12) as well as tech weekend and the full dress rehearsals (September 21, 22, 23, 24) and at least some time for strike on October 13. Other mandatory dates include the first read-through (one of July 20 or 21) and the poster run (TBD).
Rehearsals will typically be held at KWLT’s studio at 44 Gaukel Street in downtown Kitchener, beside the Victoria Park iON station; occasional rehearsals will be held at the theatre. Each play will rehearse twice a week, once on a weeknight and once on the weekend; the exact schedule will depend on actor availability. No rehearsals are planned for the Civic Holiday and the Labour Day long weekends.
Production Team Openings
The production team is still looking for people to fill the following roles:
- Costumer: Works with the director and actors to define the characters’ wardrobes and procure any necessary pieces. Should be interested in a range of costuming from badass to goofy, and the challenge of renewing clothing that will be covered in stage blood. Experience helpful but not necessary.
- Producer: Creates and implements marketing plans. Manages budgets. Forms and delegates tasks to a small committee within the production to create promotional material for the show. No experience necessary. Time commitment varies.
- Props master: Works with the director and technical director to select and procure properties and set dressing elements. Interested in figuring out a good and inexpensive delivery mechaism for gunshot blood, as well as an assortment of props to fit the 90s. No experience necessary.
