“People are Animals”

A frequent theme in the media, now and for some time, is: why can’t we all just get along?

We live in a civilization, after all: a society that believes in freedom of expression and the power of rationality. Surely we can talk through our disagreements, come to some kind of accord even in an emotionally charged situation?

You might think so. But then, take a look at the nightly news, or dip into any Internet comments section, and you might think otherwise.  Because try as we might to transcend our base nature, the fact remains: people, at the root, are animals. And when we sense a threat — to our young, to our status, to our self-image — we lash out.

God of Carnage is a cynically comedic exploration of this split between human aspirations and animal nature. Two couples meet to discuss an fight between their sons, with the best of intentions to keep things polite. Those intentions… don’t last very long.

KWLT’s production hits our stage November 21, and tickets are on sale now.
