Committee spotlight: New Works Collective

Started in 2023, KWLT’s New Works Collective supports the development of new theatrical works within our KWLT community. We had a chance to chat with Derek Czajkowski, one of the founders of the committee, to learn more about its goals and why he’s so passionate about it.

Hi Derek, thanks for meeting with us. To start, could you tell us about your experience here at KWLT?
I got my start with KWLT in August 2023, when I was involved with three one-act plays in its Studio Series. After that, I co-founded the New Works Collective with Morgan Anderson. It’s a writers’ group focused on developing and staging new works. In August 2024, we organized and produced the very successful New Works Festival, where I had two pieces featured.

What inspired you to start the New Works Collective?
I wanted to create a grassroots community where writers could come together, support each other through the writing process, and bring our original works to life on stage. My goal was to create a space where local writers could explore their creativity, make art, and have fun in the process.

What do you enjoy most about being part of this collective?
Our meetings are always engaging, productive, and fun. We learn so much about writing for theatre, but my favorite part has to be the people. The writers in our group are truly inspiring.

What’s been the biggest accomplishment of the New Works Collective so far?
Without a doubt, it’s the New Works Festival! It was a three day festival where we put on thirteen brand pieces that were created and workshopped by members of the New Works Collective. Performances were pay-what-you-can and it gave us the opportunity to craft an experience that could really bring the new and old community members together, and make something that let us really flex our creativity.

Looking ahead, where do you see the collective heading?
I want our writers to go on to publish their work, have their plays produced professionally, and even build careers in theatre. Beyond that, I’d love for the New Works Collective to become known for producing compelling, original works, and to be a vibrant force in the local arts scene—and maybe even beyond.

Who would make a great addition to your collective?
Anyone who has a passion for writing theatre and is ready to put in the hard work.

How would having more members or connections help your group?
I’d love for us to continue showcasing our work in various venues. Having more members to work through pieces, and help to connect with other theatres—especially outside of town—would open up exciting opportunities. The success of our summer festival showed that we can achieve great things with the people we have now.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
New work is the lifeblood of art. The more new works we can create, the richer our world becomes. I want to fill the world with the beauty, power, and creativity of art and theatre. Be bold. Be brave. Be adventurous. And remember—every day, someone is doing what others said wasn’t possible.
